Seth Godin and Daniel Goleman are not just names you casually throw around. They are giants in their fields and colossi among the popular intellectuals of today. Consequently, you wouldn’t be too surprised to find their names – at positions #2 and #6 – in a list of the top 50 leadership and management experts in the world.

Well, John C. Maxwell is above them on the list. Above everybody, in fact. Because, in the world of leadership, he’s a more than a giant: he’s a titan.

Who Is John C. Maxwell?

John Calvin MaxwellJohn Maxwell was born in Garden City, Michigan, in 1947, in a devoutly Christian family.

Much like another self-help intellectual heavyweight, Stephen R. Covey, he followed his father into ministry. In fact, all of his degrees are from Christian universities: a BA from Ohio Christian University, an MDiv from Azusa Pacific University and a D. Min. from California’s Fuller Theological Seminary.

You can’t become a Doctor of Ministry if not simultaneously engaged in practical ministry, so it should come as no surprise to the reader that, starting from the 1970s, John Maxwell has preached at numerous churches in Ohio, Indiana, Florida, and California.

He became a senior pastor at the evangelical Skyline Church in La Mesa in 1981 and served at this position for the next 14 years. During his tenure, the church tripled its average weekend attendance, becoming a megachurch in the process with over 3,000 visitors per week.

In 1995, Maxwell stepped from this position to focus on “INJOY Stewardship,” a company he founded in 1992 with a vision to “not simply help churches raise money, but rather, to help churches raise more fully surrendered followers of Jesus.”

During this time, Maxwell will be able to spend more hours of his time writing and publishing, and, in few years, he will become a household name in the world of leadership.

Three of the books he will write during this period will become “New York Times” bestsellers, selling over 1 million copies in a fairly short period: “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership,” “21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader” and “Developing the Leader Within You.”

He would follow the success with many other classics, among them “Leadership Gold,” “The Five Levels of Leadership,” “Talent Is Never Enough,” “Put Your Dream to the Test,” and “Thinking for a Change.”

Not surprisingly, in 2005, Maxwell will be inducted in Amazon’s Hall of Fame, as one of its 25 inaugural members, rubbing shoulders with Stephen Covey, Johnson and Blanchard, Jim Collins, and Marcus Buckingham – you know, few spots below the towering Tolkiens and J. K. Rowlings ruling the universe of fictional books.

By this time, Maxwell would once again return to congressional ministry at Florida’s Christ Fellowship, where he is still a pastor.

In addition to “INJOY,” Maxwell has founded “The John Maxwell Company,” “The John Maxwell Team” and “EQUIP,” and has supposedly trained more than 5 million leaders in almost every country in the world. He has spoken to and consulted numerous Fortune 500 companies and even presidents of nations.

Such was the case with Thomas Edison. He wanted to improve the telegraph. He failed. But, along the way, he discovered the gramophone.

“A man of genius makes no mistakes,” wrote James Joyce. “His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery.”

The point is that many of your failures are actually not your fault; all of your successes, however, are your responsibility. Roger Crawford, for example, wanted to become a tennis player, but he was born with a disability. Even so, he managed to overcome it.

Learn from his example the next time something bad and uncontrollable happens to your business. Face the obstacle with an attitude of a winner!

And that attitude is, actually, the attitude of a knower and an optimist.

The forth challenge is winning the battle against the ego: even though you lead, you’re not on the top. Related to this is the fifth, “the fulfillment challenge”: people feel more fulfilled when on top. Sixthly, you have to champion your vision – which is a difficult task. And, finally, when you’re middle-level manager, you must lead people above you. This is “the influence challenge.”

The 9 Lead-Up Principles

When you’re in the middle, you are expected to lead those above you as well. There are nine principles you should follow. First of all, to lead yourself exceptionally well. Secondly, to lighten your leaders’ load. Thirdly, to lead by example and do what others will never do.

Next – to not be a manager or a boss, but a leader. Fifthly – to create good relationships. Sixth – to be always prepared. Which means – and this is the 7th principle – to know when to push, and when to back off. This will make you “a go-to player” – the guy everyone goes to in case of a problem. This is the 8th lead-up principle.

Finally, the last one is of a more personal nature: self-improve. Or, as Maxwell says, “be better tomorrow than you are today.”

The 7 Lead-Across Principles

Leading across is an art. You must help your peers, i.e., those around you. And it can be accomplished much more easily if you base your actions on these seven principles.

First of all – “understand, practice, and complete the leadership loop”. Wondering what a leadership loop is?“ It’s a 7-phase process, consisting of: caring, learning, appreciating, contributing, verbalizing, leading, and succeeding.

Related to this is the 2nd lead-across principle: complete your fellow leaders; don’t compete against them. Or in other words – principle #3 – be a friend. You’ll become one if you stay away from office politics, expand your circle and letting the best idea (and not your idea) always win.

And that will show everybody that you’re not perfect. Which will make others love you more.

The 7 Lead-Down Principles

The 7 lead-down principles start with a strange – and yet a common sense – advice: walk slowly down the halls. Or, translated talk around with your subordinates, finding out all that you can about them.

This is related to the second principle: even though below you, these people are great. Consider them great and develop them as people through the power of positive relationships. And, by finding out their strengths and inspiring them to use them.

The fifth lead-down principle is a Gandhian one: be a model! Only in that case you’ll be able to transfer your vision – which is the penultimate lead-down principle.

Seventh – perseverance. The second part of the grit equation. “Many of life’s failures,” said Thomas Edison once, “are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” So, don’t. Ever.

Eighth – courage. If you want to take a message to García, you’ll need to have a courage to go through the enemy lines. Without courage, fear may paralyze your talent. You won’t make a single step.

Ninth – teachability. “A winner,” wrote Sydney J. Harris, “knows how much he still has to learn, even when he is considered an expert by others.” So, coach yourself to win.

Tenth – character. Character is the basis of your talents. If you don’t have a strong character, your talents may worth nothing. Don’t let your character let you down.

You cannot “become” a leader since “becoming” alludes to a final position, a reached goal.

Instead, you can “be” a leader, since leadership is a journey that lasts your whole life.

As you develop, you will move through five levels, which will multiply your amount of work, but at the same time, with each passed stage, you will feel that leadership gets easier.

There is no shortcut since every new level is built upon the previous one.

Moving up takes a long time, a lot of patience and commitment, but the higher you get, the more fulfilled you will feel until you finally see the end goal: to build a legacy.

So, what are these five levels we are telling you about?

You are on level 1, or the “Position” level, when you first begin as a manager.

When you sit on the managerial stool, your first task is to show your boss and the employees that they made the right decision, and show them how you can help them succeed.

Now, just having a managerial title does not mean you are a leader since a title is not equal to power, but it does mean that your status has improved.

Do not use your position to order people around.

Instead, use your powers to inspire and motivate people and build a following. Caring about your position only will do you harm since people cannot tolerate leaders who do not value them, which can cause a high turnaround.

The next level is the “permission” level which is where the real leadership begins.

Most people chose between two paths: either working hard and being productive or forming relationships.

However, productivity is essential at level 3, and as we said, you cannot skip levels. So, this level is all about the “soft” path and forming relationships with your employees.

We assure you, your employees will work harder and better as they feel mutual support, trust and respect.

The third level, as we already mentioned, is the “production” stage, and it is the one which differentiates between a “title” and a real leader.

Why?

Simple: you cannot fake production, and you have to produce results to be able to grow as a leader.

To boost productivity, focus on tasks that yield the greatest returns, and eliminate everything that might slow, or even limit your productivity.

On this level you will face hard decisions, taking responsibility and accountability for mistakes.

When you get to this stage, the relationships with your employees will change, since not everyone will follow you on the path to higher productivity.

Once you successfully pass level three, you will find yourself on the “people development” level.

There you will move from leading a productive team to creating a leadership culture.

In other words, you get to level 4 when you have developed your employees from followers to leaders.

Create units of people that complement each other, and use each individual’s strengths to increase the overall productivity. Invest in people – they are the only resources that do not depreciate.

We will not lie to you, reaching high levels of leadership is no easy thing to do. You need to know in which level you are at the moment, so you can know what to focus on.

For example, many leaders who reach level 4 continue focusing on increasing production, when they should be training future leaders instead.

So, learning to change your mindset from “doing” to “developing” is essential.

When you are a level 4 leader, you are at the top of a pyramid of leaders you created. The company reaps benefits from all those leaders. So take your time and build your pyramid.

Be ready to work hard, since working with people and motivating them to develop may be the most laborious task you will face.

You will reach level 5 by never stopping the learning process, training the best people, and fighting your own fears and insecurities.

At level 5 your main goal is defining leadership, practicing what you preach, developing leaders, and thus creating a leadership culture.

Try to think of what leadership should be, and create a legacy.

Most leaders may not make it this far, or they reach this level late in their careers.

The important thing to note is that when you reach this level if you do, you will influence not only your organization but the whole society.
